We at The Cow are very excited about it, so we asked Aharon to tell you about it. We've also included some of the trailers Aharon created in his inimitable style -- great information presented with humor and high energy. What does the DVD cover?
The DVD covers 4 subjects – Video Compression, Creating and working with Flash Video, Formatting and Distributing Video Podcasts, and how I make my tutorials.

In all, it's over 4.5 hours of training to help you get your video on the web.

So what exactly is the point of this DVD? It seems like kind of an odd assortment of topics.

Oh yeah? Well... It's not. At least not really. Because I've placed so many tutorial and other videos on the web in different formats, I get asked 4 questions a lot:

* How can I get my compressed videos to look as good as yours?
* How can I integrate Flash video with my web site?
* How do I format and set up a video podcast?
* Hey, Aharon, How do you make your tutorials?

All of these questions revolve around one thing: people want to share their video content with the world (whether it's clients, students, colleagues, or even friends and family), and don't know how. Or at least don't know how to do it well. Since there is so much conflicting info and confusion about this, and there's no resource (that I know of) that reliably brings these subjects together, I decided to try and create a product that could help anyone who wanted to put their content on the web.

The Goal of the DVD is to help video artists get their video content on the web, looking as good as it can, and to help them reach the largest audience possible.

In addition, for those who are interested in sharing their knowledge through tutorials, the DVD also contains a full section covering a tutorial production workflow.

So what’s actually on the DVD?
The DVD contains 26 tutorial videos. I cover each topic for slightly more than an hour, so, in total, there’s about 4.5 hours of video training. The tutorials are provided in both Flash format at 1024x768 and in Quicktime format at 800x600.

What does the section on video compression cover?
Everything you ever wanted to know (or didn’t) about the subject. Things like formats, codecs, keyframes, bit-rates, and streaming, plus audio compression properties such bit depth and sample rate. When you’re done watching this, you will truly understand what all those options you see in your compression program are for, and as a result, will be able to create better quality video, no matter what software you use.


How long did it take you to make the DVD?
More time than I'd like to admit. I took over one month off from working on any other project to research the information, and write the tutorials. There really is so much conflicting data that I had to go right to the sources - reading tech documents from different hardware and software companies and speaking directly to product managers and software technicians, when the documents needed clarification.



After that, I got back to working on other projects, but spent the majority of my time filming, recording, capturing and finally creating motion graphics and editing. All in all, it's taken about 5 months from start to finish. I wanted this product to be not only useful and informative, but top quality as well. Oh, and funny. Yeah.

How did you capture/film the video on your DVD?
Wait, you want me to give away all of my secrets?! Fair enough. I used Camtasia Studio to do screen captures of the software, and the beta of Adobe Visual Communicator 3 along with my consumer grade video camera (Canon Optura 60) to capture the live action stuff.

Does the DVD come with software to work along with you?
No, but most of the software I use has free trial versions available for download. I almost always list the web site for each program I use. Also, this isn't really the kind of DVD where you work along side the trainer. There are no project files or anything like that. It's mostly hands free. You can play the drums or violin while watching if that's your thing, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Do I need to be using the same software you use?
In the area of compression, no. With very few exceptions, the properties of video compression are universal across almost every application that can create compressed video. I use Sorenson Squeeze, but you definitely don't have to.

As far as the other sections go, it depends on what you mean. In some cases I cover how to do something in a specific application, such as Adobe Flash. Usually I try to talk about more than one program for doing any task. And, of course, when I show you my tutorial production workflow, I do it by using the specific tools that I regularly use in the process. But even there, it's almost entirely about the ideas, not the software itself.


Trailer 3: The Good, The Bad, and The Lossy.

I've never used Flash, Camtasia, Squeeze, Windows, a computer...etc. Will this DVD teach me how to use that software/hardware?
No. Well, not really. Because the DVD covers such a broad scope of subjects, all I can do in many cases is show how to accomplish a specific goal in a specific program. So if you've never used that program before watching this, you won't walk away an expert. At best, you'll know how to do that task in that program. On the other hand, If you have used the software before (for example, you have basic chops using Adobe Flash) you will walk away with some mad Flash video skills. Dude.

Don't you think doing a section on how YOU make YOUR tutorials seems a little egotistical?
Hey, don't blame me! I've gotten hundreds of emails asking me how I make tutorials. People seem really eager to share their knowledge with others (which I think is awesome), but they aren't sure how to approach doing it. This section of the DVD is my answer to all those emails. I'm not saying that my way is the best way. Everyone has to find their own groove. Since this sort of thing is so subjective, the best I could do was share what I do and what works for me. Even if not all of it is right for you, I'm told by my beta testers (I had a bout 15) that there's a lot of good material in there (audio quality, video capture, organization) to help anyone improve the way they make tutorials.

Whether you're an editor, a compositor, a web developer, or a multimedia specialst -- anyone who needs to put video on the web, incorporate Flash, or create podcasts -- you need this disk.
